Amazon Takes Legal Action Against AI Startup Perplexity
Amazon has filed a lawsuit against AI startup Perplexity over automated shopping features, igniting a debate on AI regulation and competition.
On Tuesday, Amazon initiated legal proceedings against the well-known artificial intelligence (AI) startup Perplexity AI, centering around a feature in its Comet browser that automates shopping and purchasing for users. The tech giant accused Perplexity of illicitly accessing Amazon customer accounts and misrepresenting AI-generated online activities as genuine human browsing.
In the lawsuit, Amazon's legal team stated, “Perplexity’s misconduct must end,” emphasizing that the startup is not permitted to operate in ways that have been explicitly prohibited. They further noted, “that Perplexity’s trespass involves code rather than a lockpick makes it no less unlawful.” This strongly worded statement underscores Amazon's commitment to protecting its platform and user data.
Perplexity, which has experienced rapid growth in the wake of the AI assistant boom, has previously dismissed the allegations from Amazon, claiming that the e-commerce giant is leveraging its market dominance to suppress competition. In a blog post, the startup argued, “Bullying is when large corporations use legal threats and intimidation to block innovation and make life worse for people.”

Amazon has articulated its stance that third-party applications making purchases on behalf of users should operate transparently and respect the company's policies regarding participation. In a preceding statement, Amazon indicated that it had issued a legal warning to Perplexity demanding that it prevent the Comet AI agent from shopping on its platform, framing this as a broader threat to user autonomy and the future landscape of AI assistants.
