Brave Train Worker Lauded After Cambridgeshire Stabbing Crisis
Samir Zitouni praised for his heroic actions during a mass stabbing on a train in Cambridgeshire, saving many lives amidst chaos.
A tragic event unfolded on Saturday evening aboard a high-speed train traveling from Doncaster to London, where a mass stabbing occurred, leaving numerous passengers injured. Amidst the chaos, a train worker's quick thinking and courageous actions stood out, earning him praise as a hero. Samir Zitouni, 48, has been recognized for his bravery in protecting passengers during this harrowing incident.
coin The violence erupted while the train was in motion, leading to an alarming scene that required immediate intervention. Zitouni, who has dedicated over 20 years to London North Eastern Railway (LNER), was seriously injured while attempting to shield others from the attacker. Following the incident, law enforcement officials reviewed CCTV footage, concluding that his actions were "nothing short of heroic" and likely saved many lives.
A total of 11 individuals received medical attention following the attack, which left several in critical but stable condition. Among the injured was Jonathan Gjoshe, a 22-year-old footballer for Scunthorpe United, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries. His club expressed their support through a statement, conveying heartfelt wishes for his recovery and extending similar sentiments to all the victims involved.
Authorities acted swiftly in the wake of the incident, with 32-year-old Anthony Williams appearing at Peterborough Magistrates Court, facing 10 counts of attempted murder related to the attack. This legal response highlights the seriousness of the situation and the community's demand for justice.
In a heartfelt statement released through LNER, Zitouni’s family expressed their gratitude for the support received during this challenging time. "We have been deeply touched by the outpouring of love and kindness shown to Sam, and by the many well wishes for his recovery," they shared. They emphasized their pride in Zitouni’s courageous actions, noting that while police labeled him a hero, he has always been one to his family.
David Horne, the managing director of LNER, commended Zitouni’s bravery, stating, "In a moment of crisis, Sam did not hesitate as he stepped forward to protect those around him. His actions were incredibly brave, and we are so proud of him, and of all our colleagues who acted with such courage that evening." Horne also extended thoughts and prayers to Zitouni and his family, affirming LNER's commitment to supporting them.
Heidi Alexander, the UK’s Transport Secretary, recognized Zitouni’s remarkable actions, saying, "Sam went to work on Saturday morning to do his job. He left a hero. His remarkable quick thinking and selfless action saved lives and he has demonstrated bravery beyond measure. I want to send my very best wishes to him and his family." Her sentiments reflect a broader acknowledgment of the heroic efforts made during this crisis.
Another victim, identified as Stephen Crean, aged 61, reportedly confronted the assailant directly in the carriage. This brave act of defiance highlights the courage exhibited by several passengers during a moment of extreme danger. As investigations continue, police confirmed that four people still remain hospitalized, including Zitouni, who is in a critical but stable condition, alongside three others classified as stable.
As a response to this tragic incident, Cambridgeshire police announced plans for an internal review, particularly concerning three knife-related incidents reported in the Peterborough area shortly before the train attack. This proactive approach aims to ensure community safety and prevent future occurrences of such violence.

Samir Zitouni's actions serve as a poignant reminder of the potential for heroism in even the most perilous situations. As the investigation unfolds and healing begins, the collective support for victims and their families, along with the recognition of courageous acts, will play a vital role in restoring a sense of security and hope.
