Celebrating the Life of Jean Finlayson: A Trailblazing Journalist

Jean Finlayson, a remarkable journalist, passionate campaigner, and adventurous traveler, passed away at the age of 91. Her life journey, which began in a small town in southern Illinois, was marked by a profound commitment to social justice and anti-racism, reflecting her transformative evolution from her conservative upbringing to her radical beliefs.

Born in the quaint town of Creal Springs, Illinois, Jean was the daughter of Dolph Holmes, a dedicated teacher, and his wife, Ione (nee Hepler). Growing up in a deeply religious environment, she defied the expectations of her conservative surroundings. Her academic prowess earned her a scholarship to the esteemed University of Missouri School of Journalism, where she graduated in 1956. That same year, she married William Burger and embarked on a professional journey that saw her take on the role of assistant editor for a national farming magazine.

During her time in Texas, where she resided on a remote farm with her husband, Jean's adventurous spirit compelled her to obtain a pilot’s license to navigate the vast distances. In 1958, her life took a significant turn when William was stationed in the UK as a pilot in the US Air Force. The couple relocated, and Jean began to immerse herself in the political and social landscape of her new home.

In 1960, demonstrating her fearless nature, Jean traveled to the Soviet Union—a journey she undertook against her husband’s wishes and primarily by boat. Despite her privileged lifestyle associated with the American military officer class, Jean gravitated towards progressive political circles in Britain. She actively participated in marches organized by the CND at Aldermaston, advocating for nuclear disarmament.

After separating from William, Jean married Vic Finlayson in 1963. Vic, a Scottish biochemist and Communist party activist, shared her commitment to social issues. Jean transitioned to a role as a freelance journalist, contributing to notable publications including The Guardian, The Times, and the Sunday Times. From 1970 to 1977, Jean served as a columnist for the Bath Evening Chronicle. One of her most notable stories during this time involved an exclusive on Princess Margaret’s nightlife, which led to death threats from irate royalists. Her fearless reporting and insightful commentary solidified her reputation as a pioneering figure in campaigning journalism.

Between 1977 and her retirement in 1989, Jean took on the role of publications editor at the Further Education Staff College in Blagdon, Somerset. This government agency aimed to strengthen connections between the further education sector and industry. Throughout her life, Jean remained an ardent traveler, exploring various parts of the world, especially the former Soviet bloc countries, the Middle East, and Central Asia. Even into her 80s, her passion for discovery was unwavering.

Jean was not only a journalist but also an avid reader, with a particular fondness for Russian literature. She completed War and Peace for the third time when she began to face the cruel effects of dementia, which impacted her ability to speak and read.
