Delay in Return of Chinese Astronauts Due to Space Debris
The return of three Chinese astronauts has been postponed after their spacecraft was hit by debris. The Shenzhou-20 mission faces new challenges ahead.
The return journey of three astronauts from China has been postponed indefinitely after their spacecraft, part of the Shenzhou-20 mission, was reportedly impacted by a piece of debris in orbit. This news comes from Chinese state media, which detailed the developments surrounding the astronauts' mission.
coin The trio, who have been stationed at the Tiangong space station since their launch in April, were initially scheduled to return to Earth on November 5, completing a six-month mission in space. Meanwhile, their successors, the crew of Shenzhou-21, had already arrived at the space station over the weekend, ready to take over operations.
The China Manned Space Agency released a statement indicating that the Shenzhou-20 spacecraft is under investigation for potential damage caused by the orbital debris. They emphasized that ensuring the astronauts' health and safety is paramount and have decided to delay their return until further assessments can be conducted.
Prior to the announcement of the delay, state media reported a festive atmosphere aboard the Tiangong space station, including a meal shared between the two crews featuring baked chicken, a dish prepared using the station’s inaugural oven, delivered by the fresh crew.
On Tuesday, a handover ceremony took place between the two teams, with videos shared on social media showcasing the camaraderie and cooperation of the astronauts. However, the mood shifted with the news of the impact assessment.
In light of the situation, Yu Jun, a noted aerospace and science communicator known as Steed’s Scarf on social media, informed his followers about the contingency plans in place. If the assessments reveal that the risks are too great for the Shenzhou-20 to return, authorities will implement a “plan B.” This could involve deploying a backup spacecraft that is already on standby.
According to Yu, the Shenzhou-22 and the Long March 2F launcher are prepared for emergency duty and can be deployed to ensure the astronauts' safe return if necessary. This reflects China's meticulous planning and readiness within its manned space program.
China has made significant advancements in its manned space endeavors, completing a total of 37 missions, including six crewed flights. The nation has set ambitious goals, aiming to land a human on the moon by 2030, as part of its broader space exploration strategy.
The commander of the returning Shenzhou-20 team, Chen Dong, has already etched his name in history, holding the record for the longest cumulative time spent in space by a Chinese astronaut, with over 380 days in orbit. Additionally, he has completed six spacewalks, the highest number by any Chinese astronaut to date.
Despite these remarkable achievements, it is noteworthy that no Chinese astronauts have visited the International Space Station (ISS). This is primarily due to a U.S. law that prevents NASA from collaborating with Chinese space agencies. Nevertheless, China has expressed its intent to foster international cooperation on its Tiangong space station.
The delay in the return of the Shenzhou-20 astronauts underscores the inherent risks involved in space travel, particularly concerning space debris. As China continues to push the boundaries of its space program, the global community will be watching closely, not only for the resolution of this incident but also for the future of international collaboration in space exploration.
