Escalating Crisis in Sudan: UN Calls for Urgent Action
UN Secretary General António Guterres warns that Sudan's civil war is spiraling out of control, urging immediate action to halt the violence.
António Guterres, the United Nations Secretary General, has expressed grave concerns regarding the escalating civil war in Sudan, emphasizing that the conflict is spiraling beyond control. He has urged for an immediate cessation of hostilities and violence in the region.
digital currency Last week, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), reportedly receiving support from the United Arab Emirates, took control of El Fasher in Darfur after an extended siege lasting nearly 18 months. Disturbingly, some RSF troops have shared footage depicting civilians being shot, including incidents occurring in a maternity hospital in the town.
The ongoing civil war, which has been waged between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF for two years, has resulted in what the UN describes as one of the most severe humanitarian crises of the 21st century. Over 150,000 lives have been lost, and more than 14 million individuals have been displaced from their homes.
On Monday, prosecutors at the International Criminal Court announced that they are gathering evidence regarding allegations of mass killings, sexual violence, and other serious crimes occurring in El Fasher.
During a press conference held on the sidelines of the World Summit for Social Development in Qatar, Guterres called upon the conflicting factions to engage in negotiations to put an end to what he described as a "nightmare of violence." He stated, "The horrifying crisis in Sudan… is spiraling out of control. El Fasher and its surrounding areas in North Darfur have become a focal point of suffering, hunger, violence, and displacement. Since the RSF's entry into El Fasher last weekend, conditions have worsened daily. Hundreds of thousands of civilians remain entrapped by this siege, facing death from malnutrition, disease, and violence."
As discussions continued among the SAF, based in Port Sudan, they considered whether to support a proposed truce from the United States or to demand that any ceasefire be contingent upon the RSF withdrawing from urban areas, including El Fasher. The RSF's capture of El Fasher has granted them control over all five state capitals in Darfur, raising alarms about the potential partition of Sudan along an east-west divide.
Despite these fears, Babikir Elamin, Sudan's ambassador to the UK, indicated that there is minimal support for partition within Darfur itself. He emphasized that the immediate focus should not be on establishing a ceasefire but rather on taking decisive action to halt the ongoing massacres in El Fasher.
The United States has been actively working since September to encourage both sides to endorse a peace plan brokered by Egypt, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia. This plan proposes an initial three-month humanitarian pause, followed by a permanent ceasefire that would lead to a nine-month transition towards a civilian-led government.
As the civil war gains greater international attention, the U.S. hopes that this newfound publicity will compel the warring factions and their external allies to reconsider their rigid positions. However, initial reports from a lengthy meeting of the SAF's security and defense council indicate strong opposition to the U.S.-proposed plan, which was developed by Donald Trump’s envoy to Africa, Massad Boulos.
Some sources within the SAF have acknowledged increased pressure from Egypt to agree to a ceasefire. In response, they have called for the RSF to be restricted to camps outside urban areas. The feasibility of enforcing such RSF withdrawals remains uncertain, complicating the pathway to peace.
The situation in Sudan continues to deteriorate, with millions caught in the crossfire. As António Guterres and the international community call for an end to the violence, it is imperative for global leaders to respond and take effective measures to alleviate the suffering of countless civilians impacted by this ongoing conflict. Only through united efforts can there be hope for a peaceful resolution in Sudan.
