Minneapolis Mayoral Race: Fateh's Grassroots Challenge to Frey
Omar Fateh's grassroots campaign in Minneapolis aims to challenge incumbent mayor Jacob Frey, echoing the themes of affordability and social equity.
On a dreary October afternoon, a group of enthusiastic volunteers gathered at a park in Minneapolis, ready to distribute campaign materials in support of a Democratic socialist candidate aspiring to become the city's next mayor. Among them was Omar Fateh, a 35-year-old state senator known for his grassroots approach, who has garnered the nickname the "Mamdani of Minneapolis".
As rain fell, several door-knockers sought shelter in an apartment building, joining Fateh in his mission to connect with voters. "We’re running on a campaign to make the city more livable, affordable and to protect all of our residents," he explained to one voter who admitted to not being closely engaged in the race. Fortunately, two others recognized his name and expressed their support, with one man stating, "I think I’m planning on voting for you." The crucial mayoral election in Minneapolis is set for Tuesday, November 4.
Fateh has drawn attention for his parallels to Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic socialist candidate poised to win the mayoral race in New York City. Both are young, part of the progressive left, and share Muslim backgrounds, serving as state lawmakers focused on policies that prioritize affordability and social equity. Their campaigns have successfully engaged grassroots organizers, particularly from the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).
In both Minneapolis and New York City, ranked-choice voting is utilized, allowing candidates to form alliances against the incumbent. Unlike New York, where primaries dominate, Minneapolis employs caucuses and a city convention system for candidate selection. Although Fateh received an endorsement from the Minneapolis Democratic-Farmer-Labor party, this endorsement was later rescinded by the state party due to a failure in the electronic voting system that did not capture all votes. This situation, acknowledged by the Minneapolis DFL, left the race without an officially endorsed candidate.
Fateh remarked on the significance of the DFL endorsement for name recognition, stating, "One of the biggest benefits of the DFL endorsement is name recognition. But that name recognition became far greater than what we ever could have gotten with the endorsement after they revoked it." The withdrawal of the endorsement has inadvertently boosted his visibility.
The Minneapolis mayoral race lacks the political drama seen in New York City, characterized by the involvement of controversial figures such as former Governor Andrew Cuomo and the incumbent mayor, Eric Adams, both of whom have faced ethical scrutiny. In contrast, the Minneapolis race centers around incumbent mayor Jacob Frey, who is vying for a third term. Frey, 44, faces criticism for his management of the protests following George Floyd's murder in 2020, ongoing policing challenges, a homelessness crisis, and tensions with a progressive city council.
As a moderate, Frey often acts as a counterbalance to the more progressive members of the city council, which includes several Democratic socialists. The mayoral race features a total of 15 candidates, among which four Democrats are considered viable contenders. The top three challengers, including Fateh, have formed a coalition, supporting one another by attending each other’s events. However, Fateh has taken the bold step of advising voters not to rank Frey on their ballots.
Public polling for the race has been limited, complicated by the intricacies of ranked-choice voting. Nevertheless, the enthusiasm surrounding Fateh's campaign has become a focal point of the election, drawing attention from both local and national observers.
As the election approaches, Omar Fateh's grassroots campaign represents a significant moment in Minneapolis politics. With a focus on affordability, livability, and community support, his candidacy resonates with voters seeking change. The outcome on November 4 will not only determine the future of the mayor’s office in Minneapolis but could also signal a broader shift in the political landscape of Minnesota and beyond.
