Navigating Career Risks: Insights from Grindr's Ex-CFO
Vanna Krantz shares her career journey from finance to Grindr, emphasizing the importance of preparation, connection, and seizing opportunities.
CoinZn Vanna Krantz's career journey, spanning the high-stakes environment of New York's financial sector to her pivotal role in taking Grindr public, is a testament to the notion of embracing 'lucky breaks.' However, Krantz emphasizes that luck is far from mere happenstance; it emerges when thorough preparation intersects with unwavering conviction, and when leaders are ready to invest in themselves.
“A few breaks are essential,” Krantz asserts, having recently stepped down from her position as CFO while continuing to provide her expertise in an advisory capacity at Grindr. “I believe I can convey my passion, giving people the impression that I am committed to working tirelessly for their success, and that strategy has served me well.”
Throughout her career, Krantz’s relentless work ethic and impactful presence have been instrumental in navigating some of the most pivotal moments in her professional life. In her earlier years at esteemed institutions such as PwC, Merrill Lynch, and subsequently at Morgan Stanley and Credit Suisse, she honed her skills in the demanding realm of finance. “Those environments were quite challenging,” she reflects. “They truly tested your ability to either sink or swim.” This experience instilled a sense of confidence and discipline that would underpin her future endeavors.
A significant turning point occurred when a senior executive at Thomson Financial recognized her potential and appointed her as Senior Vice President shortly before the company's acquisition of Reuters. Later, another leader took a significant risk by promoting Krantz to Divisional CFO of Reuters Media. This experience taught her that opportunities often emerge when one is viewed as both capable and dedicated.
During her decade at Thomson Reuters, Krantz refined her approach to what she describes as “academy-level finance,” gaining insights into how finance can serve as a strategic engine rather than just a back-office function. This solid foundation proved invaluable when she transitioned to BAMTech Media, a streaming infrastructure startup eventually acquired by Disney, where she assumed the role of CFO for the newly established Disney+.
Krantz reflects on this transition as driven more by instinct than meticulous planning. “It was a leap of faith,” she confides. She joined the nascent Disney+ team, attracted by the people and the project's potential, without any guarantees of success. While there was hope for the project to thrive, she admits that no one could have foreseen the magnitude of its eventual impact.
During her tenure, Krantz played a crucial role in guiding Disney+ through one of the most successful streaming launches in history. When Grindr reached out to her, it signified both a new challenge and a chance to leverage her expertise in navigating transformations. As CFO, she was instrumental in taking the LGBTQ+ social platform public in 2022, redefining the company’s identity as a digital community rather than merely a dating application.
Yet, Krantz readily admits that not every leap results in a smooth landing. “When you take a leap of faith, it doesn’t always pan out as expected—and I’ve experienced that too,” she acknowledges. In earlier positions, she sometimes delivered her insights with excessive certainty. Armed with data and firm belief, she would present her case compellingly, but occasionally lacked the necessary tact. Over the years, she learned that being correct isn’t sufficient to persuade others; effective communication necessitates building connections as much as it does presenting evidence.
“It’s essential to understand when people need to feel comfortable first,” she advises.
In recent years, Krantz has benefitted from the guidance of a professional coach, which has helped her refine her intuition in this area. She humorously acknowledges that her tolerance for discomfort is exceptionally high—intense feedback and harsh criticism rarely deter her.
