North Sea Workers Face Job Loss Over Weight Restrictions

The new regulations state that any worker weighing over 124.7 kg (19.5 stones) while fully clothed must shed excess pounds by next November to remain eligible for offshore positions.

This policy is driven by safety concerns, specifically the need to ensure that workers can be safely evacuated by rescue helicopters in emergencies. According to the industry’s trade body, Offshore Energies UK, around 2,500 of the workers currently employed offshore exceed this weight limit.

Graham Skinner, the health and safety manager at Offshore Energies UK, emphasized the organization’s commitment to assisting affected employees. He stated, “We will be working really hard over the next 12 months to ensure affected workers can lose weight.” Speaking during an interview on BBC Radio Scotland’s Good Morning Scotland, Skinner noted that the trend of increasing weight among the workforce mirrors a broader issue within the general population.

Beyond the 2,500 workers over the weight limit, Skinner highlighted that an additional 2,500 offshore personnel are below the threshold but may still require weight management support. This brings the total number of individuals who could be impacted by this policy to approximately 5,000.

Skinner pointed out that the industry has been tackling this issue for years, but the trend of rising weights among offshore workers has persisted. “It increases year on year and it begins to create some challenges across all the safety systems we have in place offshore,” he explained. These safety systems are critical for ensuring that workers can be brought home safely in the event of illness or injury.

For the past two and a half years, oil and gas companies have collaborated to explore solutions to these challenges. They have examined various aspects of emergency response, including lifeboats, stretchers, and helicopter rescues. “We’ve really discovered a weight limit is the only solution available to us,” Skinner concluded.

The introduction of weight restrictions for offshore workers highlights a pressing concern in the oil and gas industry in the UK, particularly in Scotland. As obesity rates continue to rise, it is crucial for companies to not only enforce these new policies but also provide the necessary support to ensure the health and safety of their workforce.
