Roblox is implementing innovative age-verification features aimed at enhancing the safety of its platform for younger users in Australia. This rollout is particularly timely as Australia prepares to enforce a new law banning under-16s from using social media. However, Roblox maintains that its platform should be exempt from this legislation.

Beginning Wednesday, Australian users will have the option to voluntarily estimate their age through the app's integrated Persona age estimation technology. This feature employs the camera on users' devices to analyze facial characteristics and provide a live age estimate. As part of this initiative, age verification will become mandatory in Australia, the Netherlands, and New Zealand starting in the first week of December, and it is set to expand to additional markets by early January.

Once users complete the age verification process, they will be classified into one of six distinct age groups: under 9, 9-12, 13-15, 16-17, 18-20, or 21+. Roblox has announced that members within each age group will only be permitted to communicate with peers in their designated age bracket or those in similar groups, thereby fostering a safer online environment.

The initiative was first discussed in September and has been positively recognized by Australia’s eSafety commissioner, who views it as a testament to the ongoing efforts to enhance safety on digital platforms. Following months of negotiations with Roblox over safety issues, the commissioner expressed optimism about the changes being introduced.

A recent investigation by Guardian Australia highlighted serious safety concerns when a user with an eight-year-old profile experienced virtual harassment and violence while playing Roblox. This alarming finding has led to increased pressure on regulators to include Roblox in the upcoming ban on social media usage for those under 16, which is set to take effect on December 10.

Despite the impending ban, gaming platforms like Roblox have a specific exemption. Julie Inman Grant, eSafety Commissioner, has indicated that the agency is contemplating the chat and messaging functionalities within the game. “If the online gameplay is the significant or sole purpose, if that were taken away, would the kids still use that messaging functionality to chat? Probably not,” she stated, raising critical questions about the nature of communication on the platform.

In a conversation with Australian journalists regarding the new changes, Roblox’s Chief Safety Officer, Matt Kaufman, described the platform as an “immersive gaming platform.” He elaborated, “I like to think of it as games being scaffolding for social interaction. Sometimes it doesn’t matter what the game is. What really matters is you’re bringing people together to spend time together.”

When pressed on whether Roblox should be classified as a social media platform under the new restrictions, Kaufman differentiated Roblox from traditional social media. He explained that social media, in his view, primarily revolves around sharing content in a feed that others can view. “It’s like a popularity contest in our mind that defines the core of what social media is,” he said. He emphasized that Roblox serves as a medium for friends to gather and play games, which differs fundamentally from the nature of social media.

When asked whether the introduction of these age assurance features was a strategy to evade the upcoming social media ban, Kaufman did not provide a direct answer. Instead, he reiterated the importance of defining Roblox's purpose and how it aligns with safety measures.

As Roblox continues to adapt its features to enhance user safety, the platform's exemption from Australia’s under-16s social media ban remains a contentious topic. The company’s commitment to implementing age verification reflects a proactive approach to addressing safety concerns while navigating the complexities of digital media regulations. With these new measures set to launch soon, all eyes will be on Roblox to see how effectively they can create a safer environment for their younger audience.
