The Impact of Reddit's Social Media Ban on Young Users
Reddit's upcoming social media ban raises concerns for young users seeking support and community in a digital world.
Much like the quirky sounds emitted by my car engine, the impending social media restrictions have been lingering in my peripheral vision, vaguely acknowledged yet not fully investigated — until now. Recently, it was announced that Reddit will be joining a roster of platforms that must prohibit users under the age of 16 from accessing their sites. This list includes well-known giants like Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and Snapchat. Interestingly, a newly recognized video-sharing platform named Kick, which merges the branding of an energy drink with a youth pastor vibe, is also on the list. Oh, to be young once more!
For those who may not be deeply entrenched in the online world, Reddit is a social news aggregation site that organizes content through user-created communities, known as “subreddits.” There’s a subreddit for virtually every interest, ranging from mainstream humor to specific queries. It primarily features text-based content and allows unlimited word counts, making it an ideal playground for aspiring writers, passionate debaters, and anyone who enjoys nostalgic online exchanges.
If Instagram caters to the glamorous and Facebook serves the older generations, then Reddit appeals to those who may have faced challenges during their school years. As a frequent user, I might be projecting my own experiences. Despite the need for good sleep hygiene, on sleepless nights, I often find myself diving into r/thalassophobia, watching deep-sea videos that evoke both fear and drowsiness.
Statistics reveal that the average Reddit user is around 23 years old. While young people are busy dancing on TikTok and engaging with the peculiar happenings on Kick, there’s a substantial number of adolescents on Reddit who will soon find themselves unable to access their favorite platform when the ban comes into effect next month. This raises the question: what will become of these individuals?
Some may suggest that these users could simply “go outside,” and while I partially agree, one has to wonder where they would turn for the addictive and often divisive content found on the AITA (Am I The Asshole) subreddit. This forum embodies two of the internet’s most prevalent pastimes: judging strangers and fabricating narratives. Participating in AITA allows people to engage with their inner critic in a safe and consensual environment — a harmless pastime akin to booing a spider.
What about the young users who contribute to the 8.6K weekly visits to the Amish subreddit? Is that all just a joke? I hold a special fondness for Reddit because it serves as a hub for many earnest and quirky individuals, and I sometimes wish I had embraced my own earnestness sooner in life.
While the intention behind restricting younger teens from social media is to shield them from various risks, it may inadvertently hinder their ability to find genuine support and safety. Reddit has become a refuge where young people can seek guidance, as seen in posts within the Centrelink and AusLegal subreddits. Users are often quick to respond with advice and support for those in need—be it for abused children, isolated youths, or LGBTQ+ individuals. Yet, Reddit is also home to bizarre stories, such as a man who fantasizes about his girlfriend being a cockroach, highlighting the platform's diverse nature.
If the Australian government has gleaned anything from the history of prohibition in the United States — which they certainly should have — it’s that humans have an inherent tendency to pursue what is forbidden. Whether it involves drinking, dancing, or even wearing pants as a woman, people are drawn to the very limitations imposed upon them.
As the social media ban approaches, the potential impact on Reddit’s younger demographic is significant. While the government aims to protect these users, it’s essential to consider the supportive communities they may lose access to on the platform. As we navigate these changes in Australian politics and technology, it’s crucial to strike a balance between safeguarding youth and allowing them the freedom to engage with online communities where they find understanding and camaraderie.
