Devastating Explosion at a Tennessee Explosives Facility

A catastrophic explosion at a military munitions factory in Tennessee resulted in the loss of 16 lives, obliterated the facility, and sent shockwaves felt up to 20 miles away. According to authorities, the disaster originated in a section where employees utilized kettles to create explosive mixtures, which subsequently triggered stored explosives in the vicinity.

The Ongoing Investigation

As of Friday, investigators have yet to identify the remains of two individuals who perished in the October 10 explosion at Accurate Energetic Systems in Bucksnort, a small, unincorporated community approximately 60 miles (97 kilometers) southwest of Nashville, as shared in a recent news conference.

Brice McCracken, the special agent in charge at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) National Center for Explosives Training and Research, indicated that while the on-site investigation has wrapped up, pinpointing the exact cause of the explosion may take several months. The work included the grim task of locating victims’ remains and safely disposing of unexploded materials.

Moving forward, the focus will shift to ATF laboratories and testing facilities, where investigators will analyze evidence to ascertain what initiated the explosion. Jamey VanVliet, the ATF special agent in the Nashville division, emphasized the thoroughness required for this investigation: “Those results don’t come quickly. They come through time, care, and precision. And that’s what this community deserves: answers that are proven, not guessed.”

The Scale of the Explosion

Authorities reported that between 24,000 and 28,000 pounds of explosives detonated during the incident. The explosion originated on the first floor of the 15,000-square-foot plant, close to the kettles involved in creating explosive mixtures intended for the commercial mining sector, McCracken explained.

The facility primarily produced a type of explosive known as cast boosters, which typically consist of a combination of TNT and RDX (cyclonite) poured into cardboard tubes.

In the production process, explosives were initially mixed in kettles located on the mezzanine level before being transferred down to heating kettles on the main floor, where they were kept warm and ready for packaging.

  • “Everything is mixed up top and then it pumps down into the lower floor, where it stays heated,” McCracken described. “And then they’re able to pull it out in a pitcher, and then each cast is hand-poured into the cardboard tube.”

Additionally, the main floor housed explosives near a loading dock, where cast boosters were cooled and prepared for shipping.

Investigators suspect that following the initial explosion in the production kettles, other explosive materials stored on the main floor also detonated, compounding the destruction.

Search Efforts and Area of Impact

During the investigation, officials scoured an area covering about 500 acres (200 hectares), much of which was dense woodland, in search of evidence related to the explosion.

McCracken confirmed that the site was returned to the company on Thursday.

Understanding the Incident

The explosion not only caused severe destruction at the facility but also left behind a chaotic scene of twisted metal and charred vehicles. The impact was so significant that items of interest for the ongoing investigation were found more than half a mile away, as reported by Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis. Sadly, there were no survivors among the victims.

Accurate Energetic Systems, which has around 150 employees, operates a vast facility in rural central Tennessee comprising eight specialized production buildings and a laboratory. The factory straddles the county line between Hickman and Humphreys County, located in the unincorporated area of Bucksnort, roughly 60 miles (97 kilometers) southwest of Nashville.

The company, with its headquarters in nearby McEwen, serves customers across various sectors, including aerospace, defense, demolition, and mining. It has been awarded numerous military contracts, primarily from the U.S. Army and Navy, to supply various types of munitions and explosives, according to public records.
