Trump Announces Agreement on Rare Earths and Tariff Cuts with China
Trump announces a trade agreement with China regarding rare earths and tariff reductions, alongside troubling findings about ICE detention practices.
Donald Trump has announced a significant development in US-China relations, declaring that both nations have resolved their longstanding dispute concerning rare earth minerals. This announcement follows vital trade discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea. The Chinese commerce ministry corroborated that a mutual agreement was reached through trade teams in Kuala Lumpur, which included a reduction in tariffs related to fentanyl.
As part of the negotiations, Trump indicated that he would be lowering the fentanyl tariff on Chinese goods from 20% to 10%. This adjustment is expected to reduce the overall tariff rate from 57% to 47%. In exchange, China has agreed to suspend its export controls on rare earth elements, an agreement that will be revisited annually, according to Trump. Furthermore, he mentioned that China would also commit to purchasing US soybeans, thereby strengthening agricultural ties between the two nations.
While several pressing global issues were brought up during these discussions, the topic of Taiwan was notably absent from the agenda. Trump did confirm that the situation in Ukraine was addressed, though he stated that discussions about China's procurement of Russian oil were minimal.

In a separate development, Trump has instructed the Pentagon to take immediate steps to match the nuclear weapons testing capabilities of Russia and China. In a post on Truth Social, he stated, “Because of other countries’ testing programs, I have instructed the Department of War to start testing our Nuclear Weapons on an equal basis. That process will begin immediately.” This announcement came just before his meeting with Xi in South Korea.
The last time the United States conducted a full nuclear weapons test was in 1992, and it is worth noting that neither China nor Russia has performed any nuclear tests since that year. Details regarding the specific type of weapons testing planned remain unclear at this time.
In other news, a recent investigation by The Guardian has uncovered troubling practices within the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency. The findings reveal that ICE officials have been holding individuals in temporary detention rooms for extended periods, sometimes lasting days or even weeks, in violation of federal policy.

These temporary holding rooms, often described as small concrete spaces lacking beds, are utilized to detain individuals following their arrests but prior to their transfer or release. In June, ICE altered its internal policies, raising the maximum detention time in these rooms from 12 hours to three days. This change has led to alarming increases in the length of detention, with one New York facility reporting a staggering average rise of nearly 600%.
Unlike larger ICE detention centers, the temporary holding facilities do not receive the same level of oversight. A former ICE official raised concerns about the risks of sexual assault that detainees face while in these holding rooms, either from ICE personnel or fellow detainees, especially as their time in confinement increases.
In international news, the conflict in Sudan continues to escalate. Reports indicate that the Rapid Support Forces have killed hundreds of patients and medical staff in various locations, highlighting the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region.

As the world watches these developments unfold, the agreements between the US and China on trade, particularly concerning rare earth elements, mark a crucial step toward easing tensions. Meanwhile, the issues surrounding ICE's detention practices raise significant concerns about the treatment of individuals in custody. The geopolitical landscape remains complex, with various factors, including nuclear capabilities and humanitarian crises, at play.
