Amazon to Slash 30,000 Corporate Jobs Amid Cost-Cutting Efforts
Amazon announces plans to cut 30,000 corporate jobs, reversing pandemic hiring policies as it seeks to streamline operations and reduce costs.
blockchain In a significant shift from its pandemic-era expansion, Amazon is set to eliminate approximately 30,000 corporate positions as it seeks to manage costs and streamline its workforce. This decision comes on the heels of a warning from CEO Andy Jassy, who indicated that advancements in artificial intelligence could potentially replace some roles within the company.
Reports from reputable sources such as Reuters and the Wall Street Journal reveal that the layoffs could begin as soon as Tuesday. This move marks a drastic reversal of Amazon's aggressive hiring practices during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when demand for online shopping surged dramatically. While the layoffs will only account for a small fraction of Amazon's expansive global workforce of 1.55 million employees, they will impact about 10% of the company's estimated 350,000 corporate staff.
According to CNBC, these layoffs represent the most significant reduction in workforce the company has ever undertaken. Despite the impending job cuts, Amazon's shares experienced a 1.2% increase on Monday, just days before the company is set to announce its quarterly earnings.
Amazon to Slash 30,000 Corporate Jobs Amid Cost-Cutting Efforts Amazon is not alone in this trend; numerous tech giants have also scaled back on their extensive hiring during the pandemic. Companies such as Microsoft, Meta (the parent company of WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook), and Alphabet (the parent company of Google and YouTube) have all recently laid off tens of thousands of employees.
In a memo to employees back in June, Jassy emphasized that AI tools and systems, like chatbots that operate autonomously, would necessitate fewer workers in certain areas of the organization. He stated, “It’s hard to know exactly where this nets out over time, but in the next few years, we expect that this will reduce our total corporate workforce.”
Amazon has been gradually reducing its workforce in various divisions over recent years, impacting areas such as devices, communications, and podcasting. This latest round of layoffs is expected to affect multiple sectors within the company, including human resources (referred to as people experience and technology), operations, and more. Reports suggest that up to 15% of HR roles could be affected, according to sources familiar with the company's plans.
Technology As part of the layoff process, managers of teams impacted by the cuts underwent training on Monday to prepare for communicating the news to their staff. Notifications are expected to be sent out via email starting tomorrow morning, as reported by Reuters.
Jassy has also been focusing on addressing what he describes as an excess of bureaucracy within Amazon. This includes reducing the number of managerial roles and implementing an anonymous complaint line for reporting inefficiencies. Earlier this year, he noted that this initiative has garnered around 1,500 responses and led to over 450 process changes.
As Amazon navigates this challenging transition, the decision to cut 30,000 corporate jobs reflects broader trends within the tech industry, where many companies are recalibrating their workforce in response to changing market demands. While the layoffs will undoubtedly have a significant impact on those affected, they also signify a strategic move by Amazon to refine its operations amidst the evolving technological landscape.
