Your first instinct? To feed on the unsuspecting cop who discovers you. This sets off a chaotic spree where you unleash your vampiric fury on rival undead creatures while simultaneously navigating the treacherous waters of the local vampire court, all while remaining hidden from the mortal inhabitants of this sultry city.

A Dual Narrative: The Detective and the Rampager

Yet, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 is not merely an action-packed horror romp; it also unfolds like a detective story. Within your mind resides a younger vampire named Fabian, who communicates in the manner of a 1920s gumshoe, likely reflecting his past life. Unlike you, Fabian is not driven by violence; instead, he collaborates with both the human police and the vampire underworld. He prefers to feed on willing volunteers and employs his mind-reading abilities to solve crimes.

The Fractured Development Journey

Unfortunately, the game’s development seems to have been plagued by a series of unfortunate events. The original Bloodlines game, released in 2004, earned a cult following among PC role-playing game enthusiasts. However, fans had to wait over a decade for a sequel to emerge. Development for Bloodlines 2 kicked off in 2015 at Hardsuit Labs in Seattle, with the original game’s writer at the helm. However, the project faced numerous challenges, leading to a change in developers in 2021, with The Chinese Room taking over.

A Patchwork of Ideas

This early access to significant powers diminishes the incentive to explore the full range of abilities.

In attempts to diversify my gameplay by employing these powers, such as possessing unsuspecting humans or interrogating them through mental invasion, the game often resisted my efforts. The interactions with fellow vampires have been intriguing, but my encounters with Seattle’s human denizens have often been perplexing.

Eclectic Characters and Odd Dialogues

As I roamed the streets, I encountered bizarre snippets of dialogue that left me scratching my head. For instance, sex workers would shout, “Just gotta pay off these college fees!” seemingly to no one in particular. A businessman on a bench approached me with the line, “Want to get into business together? Sexy business?”

Comparative Experiences: A Dissonant Contrast

This gameplay experience felt particularly jarring after indulging in AMC’s Interview with the Vampire series, which reimagines vampire mythology with masterful storytelling that is both thrilling and darkly humorous. In stark contrast, Bloodlines 2 comes across as merely satisfactory.
