A New Direction for the UNHCR?

Jesper Brodin, the outgoing CEO of Ikea, known for bringing innovative products like Kallax shelves and Poäng armchairs to homes across the globe, might soon take on a new role that could help reshape how the world's largest refugee organization operates.

Sweden's Nomination

Last Monday, the Swedish government put forward Brodin as its candidate for the position of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Should he be selected, this career shift would mark a significant and rare occurrence in the realm of global leadership—transitioning from the corporate sector to a pivotal role within an international organization. The UNHCR is dedicated to safeguarding individuals who are forced to flee their homes, providing emergency assistance during crises, and aiding displaced populations in finding stable housing.

Business Leaders in Global Governance

While some business figures, like Donald Trump in the United States and Silvio Berlusconi in Italy, have made their way into national politics, it is uncommon for a corporate leader to ascend to a prominent position within the United Nations. Typically, these roles are filled by seasoned diplomats and politicians, with the private sector largely absent from UN leadership positions.

One notable exception is Alexander De Croo, who has been appointed as the new head of the United Nations Development Programme. De Croo began his professional journey at the Boston Consulting Group before entering Belgian politics, following in his father's footsteps, and ultimately becoming the country’s prime minister. His wife remains a partner at the same consulting firm.

Brodin's Unexpected Nomination

“I was surprised to receive the nomination. It was not something I had planned,” Brodin shared in a Zoom interview with Fortune after the announcement. “However, with my extensive experience leading Ikea in over 40 countries, I am confident that I can contribute valuable insights and leadership to the UN.”

The Rationale Behind the Nomination

The Swedish government’s decision to nominate Brodin stems from the belief that the UN system could gain strength from a leader with a business background, especially in light of the significant challenges currently facing the organization. According to the Swedish foreign ministry, “The UN system would be strengthened by a person with business experience, especially given the major challenges now facing the UN.”

A Mission Aligned with Social Impact

Despite the rarity of such appointments, Brodin's nomination aligns with his articulated mission at Ikea, which has always been to “create a better everyday life for the many people.

Ikea's Involvement with UNHCR Initiatives

Under Brodin's leadership, Ikea has engaged in numerous projects in collaboration with the UN and UNHCR. These initiatives include a training and skills program for refugees, which has successfully reached over 3,700 individuals. Additionally, Ikea has provided direct employment opportunities to refugees from Syria and, more recently, Ukraine. Brodin will step down as Ikea CEO in November, paving the way for this potential new chapter.

The Selection Process

The UN Secretary-General will make his selection for the UNHCR by the end of the year, forwarding the nominee to member states for confirmation. Brodin's confirmation could signal a shift towards applying business methodologies within a UN framework.

A Rational Approach for a Critical Time

If Brodin is ultimately confirmed in this role, it may be indicative of a broader recognition that the UN requires a more rational business approach to address its current challenges. The organization is grappling with a serious cash crunch and other pressing issues, underscoring the need for innovative leadership.
