Discover Anamanaguchi: The Soundtrack Wizards of Scott Pilgrim
Explore the journey of Anamanaguchi, the band that brought the Scott Pilgrim games to life through their unique soundtracks and innovative music style.
bitcoin Scott Pilgrim, a renowned series of graphic novels crafted by Canadian writer and illustrator Bryan Lee O’Malley, has transcended its origins to become a cultural phenomenon. It intricately weaves themes of youthful insecurity, romantic entanglements, and personal growth, presenting a unique blend of arrogance and self-esteem. This narrative is not just a coming-of-age story about a somewhat unlikable protagonist navigating life in the 2000s; it also pays homage to a variety of influences, from Japanese manga to Western superhero tales, video games, and the iconic Tintin comics. The saga has expanded beyond its literary roots to include a popular movie, a Netflix anime series launched in 2022, and a video game released in 2010. Notably, both the anime and the game’s soundtrack were crafted by the New York City indie rock ensemble, Anamanaguchi.
Peter Berkman, one of the band's lead songwriters and guitarists, recalls a standout moment from the Scott Pilgrim anime: “My favourite scene in the Scott Pilgrim anime is where Knives and Kim are just jamming in a room together, and almost nothing happens,” he chuckles. “It’s just one of those slice-of-life moments where you remember why you love music in the first place. It really struck a chord with me. No pun intended.”
Discover Anamanaguchi: The Soundtrack Wizards of Scott Pilgrim Emerging from their college days, Anamanaguchi gained recognition for their innovative use of video game hardware in their early instrumental compositions, positioning themselves as pioneers within the chiptune genre. During their inaugural self-funded tour, Berkman experienced a stroke of luck when he received an unexpected email from Ubisoft, inquiring about music for a game tied to a universal intellectual property. Initially, he speculated, “Could that be the new Alien vs Predator game or something like that?” Nevertheless, Berkman was certain that whatever the opportunity was, the band would enthusiastically accept it, given their shared passion for video game and movie soundtracks.
This message turned out to be an invitation for Anamanaguchi to create the soundtrack for the first Scott Pilgrim video game, released in 2010. Fast forward to 2022, and the band is experiencing a resurgence of sorts. They took part in the Scott Pilgrim vs the World: The Game Soundtrack tour following the release of the game’s Complete Edition. The band also composed and performed music for the Netflix spin-off, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, which offers a meta commentary on the protagonist's life.
Choosing Between Crabble Claw and Raptidon Fin for Inez in Outer Worlds 2 In a fitting collaboration, Anamanaguchi recently supported the virtual pop star Hatsune Miku during her performance at the Fortnite festival. This partnership exemplifies the band's unique place at the crossroads of gaming and live music. Additionally, they released their first album in six years, entitled Anyway, in August. This new record marks a shift from the band’s characteristic synth-driven sounds towards a more alt-rock style, yet the 8-bit influences remain discernible for attentive listeners.
The band is not resting on their laurels; they are currently working on the soundtrack for an upcoming Scott Pilgrim video game set to launch next year. This new installment promises to be another exciting beat-’em-up adventure that fans can look forward to. As one faction of Anamanaguchi experiments with more analogue sounds infused with alt-rock angst, another branch of the band is returning to their roots with the beloved Scott Pilgrim franchise.
Anamanaguchi's evolution as a band reflects a broader narrative about the synergy between music and gaming culture. Their ability to traverse genres and mediums while staying true to their roots in video game music has cemented their place in the hearts of fans. As they embark on new projects and revisit familiar ones, Anamanaguchi continues to redefine the boundaries of pop and rock music within the gaming landscape.
