Empowering Aspiring Game Developers Worldwide: IGDA Foundation
Discover how the IGDA Foundation empowers aspiring game developers globally, breaking barriers and fostering diversity in the gaming industry.
blockchain Gamescom, the renowned annual video game convention, takes place in Cologne, Germany, attracting an impressive number of players and industry professionals alike. This event serves as a vibrant hub where game enthusiasts converge to experience the latest in gaming, while developers seize the opportunity to showcase their creations to eager fans. For many outside the United States, it stands as the most significant gaming event of the year.
This year marks the inaugural presence of the International Game Developers Association (IGDA) Foundation at Gamescom. Alyssa Walles, the executive director, expresses her enthusiasm about participating in such a pivotal event. The IGDA Foundation is committed to fostering professional growth among underrepresented and marginalized individuals aspiring to join the video game industry. This initiative is critical given the numerous obstacles faced by aspiring producers, developers, and writers.
Although Walles is relatively new to the IGDA Foundation, having joined three years ago, she has a wealth of experience in the video game sector. With a background that includes being part of the launch team for PlayStation in Europe, she often found herself as the only woman in the room. “I was part of the launch team of PlayStation in Europe, and I was the only woman in the room most of the time,” she recalls. “So I am so happy to see that change.” Walles is keenly aware that the journey is far from complete.
Empowering Aspiring Game Developers Worldwide: IGDA Foundation The IGDA Foundation began its mission by sponsoring trips for select individuals to attend the prestigious Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. However, the high costs associated with such travel often barred many talented developers from marginalized backgrounds and remote areas from participating. The Covid-19 pandemic necessitated a shift in approach, leading to the creation of the Virtual Exchange program by former executive director Nika Nour. This innovative six-week online initiative pairs grantees with experienced industry coaches.
Each year, the IGDA Foundation receives hundreds of applications from hopeful candidates. The selection process is based on three primary pillars: professionals seeking advancement within their careers, individuals transitioning into the gaming sector, and recent graduates eager to make their mark. Walles shares an inspiring story of a participant from Nigeria who embodies the spirit of determination and adaptability. “My favourite example of someone in our cohort who has work experience but is trying to break into the games industry is this young man from Nigeria. He’s a home builder, he’s project managing every day, building houses – and he codes. He wants to take that project management experience and become a producer in video games,” she explains.
Leveling Up: Discovering Community in Gaming For Walles and many seasoned industry professionals who volunteer as mentors through the IGDA Foundation, the goal is to leverage their expertise to cultivate a diverse and robust future for the gaming industry. “I’m 65, I’m not afraid about saying that … I’m on the back end of my career, and I’m here to give back,” she states, emphasizing the importance of mentorship.
Despite the significant strides made by the IGDA Foundation and similar organizations aimed at enhancing equity in the video game and tech sectors, recent years have brought their share of challenges. Following an explosive growth phase during the pandemic, the industry has encountered numerous hurdles that have tested the resilience and adaptability of programs like the IGDA Foundation.
The work of the IGDA Foundation is more crucial than ever as it strives to dismantle barriers and create opportunities for aspiring game developers from all walks of life. By fostering a more inclusive environment in the gaming industry, the foundation not only nurtures talent but also enriches the culture of gaming itself. As the industry evolves, continued support and innovation will be vital in ensuring that the voices of all creators are heard.
