Experts Caution: OpenAI's ChatGPT Atlas Faces Security Risks
Cybersecurity experts raise alarms over vulnerabilities in OpenAI's ChatGPT Atlas, warning of potential attacks that could compromise user data.
Cybersecurity professionals are sounding the alarm regarding OpenAI's latest browser, ChatGPT Atlas, which they believe could be susceptible to malicious attacks. These vulnerabilities could potentially enable the AI assistant to act against users, jeopardizing sensitive information or even draining bank accounts.
Launched on Tuesday, Atlas aims to redefine how users navigate the web by providing an AI-powered browser that assists in various tasks, from searching for information to booking travel arrangements. For instance, a user planning a vacation can leverage Atlas not only to find ideas but also to organize itineraries and directly secure flights and accommodations.
ChatGPT Atlas introduces several cutting-edge features. Among these is the “browser memories” functionality, which enables the AI to retain crucial details from a user’s web activity, thereby enhancing chat interactions and tailoring suggestions more effectively. Additionally, there’s an experimental “agent mode” that allows ChatGPT to autonomously navigate the web and interact with online content on behalf of the user.
This browser is a key component of OpenAI's broader strategy to evolve ChatGPT from a mere application into a comprehensive computing platform. This move positions OpenAI more directly against tech giants like Google and Microsoft, as well as emerging competitors such as Perplexity, which has introduced its own AI browser named Comet. (Google has also enhanced its Chrome browser with the Gemini AI model.)
Experts Caution: OpenAI's ChatGPT Atlas Faces Security Risks Despite the promising advancements, cybersecurity experts warn that AI-driven browsers introduce new security challenges, particularly concerning a phenomenon known as “prompt injection.” This type of attack involves embedding malicious commands within an AI system to manipulate its behavior, leading to the unintended disclosure of sensitive data or execution of harmful tasks.
George Chalhoub, an assistant professor at UCL Interaction Centre, shared his insights with Fortune: “There will always be residual risks associated with prompt injections, given that these systems interpret natural language and execute commands. The security landscape resembles a cat-and-mouse game, and we can anticipate the emergence of new vulnerabilities.”
Lessons from the Trenches: Insights for Entrepreneurs The primary concern lies in the inability of AI browsers to differentiate between commands issued by trusted users and those embedded within untrusted web content. Consequently, a hacker could create a malicious webpage that instructs the AI to, say, open the user’s email in a new tab and export all their messages to the attacker. In some instances, these harmful instructions may be cleverly concealed—using techniques like white text on a white background or embedding machine code—making them almost invisible to human users, yet entirely readable by the AI.
Chalhoub elaborated on the implications: “The main risk is that it blurs the lines between data and instructions, transforming an AI agent from a helpful tool into a potential threat against the user. This could result in the extraction of emails, stealing personal data, or unauthorized access to social media accounts, thereby granting the agent unrestricted access to all user accounts.”
In a post on X, Dane Stuckey, OpenAI's Chief Information Security Officer, stated that the organization is diligently researching and addressing the risks associated with prompt injections.

For this launch, we have undertaken extensive testing to mitigate these risks.”
As OpenAI's ChatGPT Atlas steps into the spotlight, users must remain vigilant about the potential security vulnerabilities that accompany AI advancements. While the technology promises to enhance online experiences, it also necessitates a careful examination of the risks involved.
