Introduction

In the realm of action games, few titles manage to blend breathtaking visuals with gripping narratives as effectively as Ghost of Yōtei. This latest installment from the acclaimed American studio Sucker Punch serves as a spiritual successor to their 2020 hit, Ghost of Tsushima. Set against the stunning backdrop of northern Japan, the game immerses players in a world filled with vengeance, beauty, and intense combat.

The Unfortunate Horse, Mochizuki

My trusty steed in Ghost of Yōtei is named Mochizuki, which translates to "full moon" in archaic Japanese. However, she often finds herself in unfortunate predicaments. The button responsible for summoning her is perilously close to the one I use for healing my character during battles, leading to frequent mishaps. On several occasions, I’ve accidentally called her into chaotic skirmishes, resulting in her charging headfirst into arrows or getting caught in the crossfire as I attempt to evade enemy attacks. At times, she stands nearby, patiently waiting for me to finish dispatching foes so we can continue our scenic adventures across the captivating region of Ezo.

A New Chapter in Samurai Action

Ghost of Yōtei builds upon the legacy of Ghost of Tsushima, delivering a visually stunning experience regardless of the player's actions. Whether engaging in tense standoffs with formidable swordsmen, trailing a golden bird or a speedy wolf to uncover hidden springs or shrines, or stealthily infiltrating a heavily guarded fortress, the game consistently captivates. However, the allure of an open-world experience can sometimes be disrupted by my own clumsiness, leading to moments of unintended hilarity, such as accidentally igniting myself in the heat of battle.

Atsu: A Vengeful Protagonist

While I found the protagonist of Ghost of Tsushima, Jin, to be deeply contemplative yet somewhat morose about his violent actions, Atsu, the heroine of Ghost of Yōtei, embraces her role as a fierce avenger without hesitation. The plot may not deviate from the typical revenge narrative—Atsu’s family is brutally murdered by the masked outlaw group known as the Yōtei Six, and she is determined to exact her revenge one by one—but the compelling performance by actress Erika Ishii pulls players into Atsu’s relentless journey. Despite warnings from other characters about the consuming nature of vengeance, Atsu remains undeterred, seemingly reveling in the chaos she creates. And I, too, find myself enjoying the thrill of battle alongside her.

Brutal and Engaging Combat

The combat in Ghost of Yōtei is satisfyingly brutal. Players can navigate through the expansive world of Ezo with a fundamental understanding of evasion, parrying, and executing well-timed sword strikes. The excitement of combat intensifies as players unlock and master various weapons, including dual katana, a spear, a bow, and the mighty ōdachi sword. The set-piece standoffs remain challenging, as Atsu faces off against generals who tower over her, knowing that just a few well-placed strikes could lead to her demise.

As a fan of challenging action games like Monster Hunter and Elden Ring, I often find free-roaming game combat to be somewhat lackluster. However, after investing more than 20 hours in Ghost of Yōtei, I appreciate that my character has not become overwhelmingly powerful, ensuring that encounters remain engaging and demanding throughout my journey.

Conclusion

Ghost of Yōtei is not just another entry in the action game genre; it’s a captivating blend of stunning visuals, compelling storytelling, and intense combat that immerses players in a beautifully crafted world. With a fierce protagonist like Atsu leading the charge, players will find themselves drawn into a tale of vengeance and chaos that is as exhilarating as it is visually striking. This game not only honors its predecessor but also carves out its own unique identity in the landscape of role-playing and fighting games.
