This serious matter has prompted an extensive investigation by law enforcement agencies across the UK, focusing on various army facilities.

The inquiry, led by Wiltshire police, encompasses claims of misconduct occurring from the 1970s through 2016. Although specific numbers of complainants have not been officially released by either the Ministry of Defence (MoD) or Wiltshire police, a reliable source has indicated that the number of women coming forward has reached into the hundreds.

The investigation, dubbed Operation Pianora, was initiated earlier this year following reports of non-recent sexual abuse targeting army recruits during their enlistment medicals. Wiltshire police stated, “We are in contact with individuals who have been affected, and we are working to reach others who may have concerns or information to share.”

Detective Superintendent Darren Hannant, the senior investigating officer, reported, “Our inquiries to date have revealed offending spanning several decades at various locations in the UK, indicating different perpetrators.” While investigators are actively pursuing multiple leads, they have yet to identify specific suspects. He emphasized that the investigation remains in its early stages, with further updates anticipated as the situation develops.

Addressing the alleged victims directly, minister for veterans Louise Sandher-Jones assured them, “I will stand with you every step of the way in your fight for justice, and the MoD will give its full backing to Wiltshire police’s investigation.” She further emphasized that all individuals serving the country should do so free from abuse, deserving dignity and respect. “We are committed to rooting out sexual misconduct wherever we find it,” she declared.

In a similar vein, Lt Gen David Eastman, deputy chief of the general staff, stated, “There is absolutely no place in the British army for sexual abuse and misconduct, and we are fully committed to supporting Wiltshire police’s appeal into these non-recent reports.” His comments reflect a broader commitment to ensuring accountability and fostering a safe environment within the military.
