Nordea Takes a Step into Crypto with New Bitcoin ETP
In a significant move for the financial sector, Nordea Bank Abp (Nordea) has revealed plans to provide its customers with access to a synthetic exchange-traded product (ETP) linked to Bitcoin (BTC), starting December 2025.
As detailed in Nordea’s official announcement, this innovative product will be created in partnership with CoinShares International Limited and will be available through Nordea’s execution-only trading platform.
Nordea Takes a Step into Crypto with New Bitcoin ETP Under the terms of this offering, customers will have the ability to trade the ETP, but it is important to note that Nordea will not provide any advisory services related to it.
The decision to launch this Bitcoin-linked product is influenced by two main factors: the evolving regulatory landscape for crypto-assets in Europe, particularly with the advent of the Markets in Crypto‑Assets Regulation (MiCa) framework, which is set to take effect across the European Union in December 2024, and the rising interest in virtual currencies among both retail and institutional investors in the Nordic market.
This ETP is classified as a “synthetic” product, meaning it offers exposure to Bitcoin through a conventional financial instrument without necessitating the direct custody of BTC.
Bitcoin's New Whales: The 45% Shift and Its Implications Nordea emphasizes that this offering is tailored for “experienced investors seeking alternative asset exposure.”
To provide some context, exchange-traded products and related vehicles linked to cryptocurrencies have been rapidly gaining traction across various European markets, allowing both retail and institutional investors to gain access to digital assets through familiar investment channels.

However, Nordea approaches this venture with caution. In its official statements, the bank reiterates its historically “cautious stance” on cryptocurrency, a position shaped by the lack of robust investor protection frameworks, regulatory clarity, and oversight during the early phases of the crypto market.
