Two Russians Sentenced in Assassination Attempt of Dissident
Two Russian mobsters were sentenced to 25 years in prison for their plot to assassinate Iranian dissident Masih Alinejad in New York.
cryptocurrency On Wednesday, a New York courtroom witnessed the sentencing of two Russian mobsters, Rafat Amirov and Polad Omarov, each receiving a 25-year prison term for their involvement in an international plot to assassinate Iranian American dissident Masih Alinejad. This conviction, reached in March at a federal court in Manhattan, saw the pair found guilty on multiple charges, including murder-for-hire and attempted murder related to racketeering.
Masih Alinejad has long been a target of the Iranian regime due to her outspoken advocacy for women's rights and her relentless criticism of the government. Alinejad, who is not only an activist but also a journalist and author, has used social media platforms to expose Tehran’s human rights violations and to demand significant change.
In her poignant address to the court shortly before Judge Colleen McMahon delivered the sentence, Alinejad spoke about the emotional scars left by the assassination attempt. "My crime is just giving voice to women of Iran – that’s it," she stated, sharing her struggles since relocating to the U.S. "I crossed an ocean to come to America to have a normal life – and I don’t have a normal life," she lamented, reflecting on her constant relocation between safe houses since the foiled murder plot came to light three years ago.
Two Russians Sentenced in Assassination Attempt of Dissident Despite the fear instilled in her life, Alinejad affirmed her strength, declaring, "I’m a brave woman. I’m a strong woman. They couldn’t break me. But, they brought fear [into] my life." She urged the judge to impose a substantial sentence to deter the Iranian regime from attempting similar criminal acts in the future, saying, "This court can send a signal to the regime in Iran that they cannot hire criminals – Russian mobsters – again." During her testimony, she wore a striking deep red leather coat, a patterned white-and-blue dress, and black combat boots, accentuated with a white flower in her hair. Throughout her speech, she frequently glanced towards Amirov and Omarov, who remained stoic and focused ahead.
During her testimony, Alinejad recounted the terrifying moment when she first noticed a seemingly ordinary man lurking outside her home. "He was walking and then he had a phone in his hand," she recalled. Initially thinking the man, later identified as Khalid Mehdiyev, might want to speak with her, she quickly realized he was on the phone. Feeling uneasy, she hurried inside her home, only to see him in her front garden. The prosecution revealed that Amirov and Omarov had allegedly paid Mehdiyev $30,000 for the hit on Alinejad, and the details of this chilling plan were laid bare during the trial.
Testimony from Mehdiyev, who acted as a government witness, further implicated the defendants. Prosecutors maintained that the Iranian government had funded Amirov and Omarov with $500,000 to orchestrate Alinejad’s assassination. In total, four Iranian nationals have been charged in relation to this plot, including a brigadier general from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, although they are believed to be residing in Iran.
https://coinzn.org/ In court filings, Omarov's defense team argued for a maximum sentence of only 10 years, while defense attorney Elena Fast controversially referenced Fyodor Dostoevsky’s classic novel Crime and Punishment in an effort to advocate for a lesser sentence than the 55 years initially suggested by the prosecution.
The sentencing of Rafat Amirov and Polad Omarov serves as a critical reminder of the lengths to which oppressive regimes will go to silence dissent. Alinejad’s bravery and unwavering commitment to advocating for Iranian women’s rights not only highlights the urgent need for justice but also reinforces the importance of standing against tyranny. Her call for a longer sentence aims to send a clear message: those who attempt to silence voices of freedom will face serious consequences.
